Can you install a roof light on a flat roof? Absolutely, that is exactly what we did at this beautiful property in Oswestry.

As you can see from the picture, this is an old stone property with a lot of character.

Rooflights for Extensions

Many older buildings need an extension, however, such an addition can make the original room very dark. As many of these extensions have a flat roof, the best way to solve this is to add a roof light or skylight (they are both the same thing) at the part of the extension closest to the original building. A raised roof light like this one will provide more light than a simple roof window. Velux wouldn’t be suitable in this instance, as they are usually installed on a sloped roof.

Correct Seal and Drainage to the Flat Roof

It is important that the seal between the roof light and flat roof is strong and enduring. A lead covering over the seal is an excellent choice. There is also an additional level of gravel which will encourage proper drainage.

Good Use of Materials

On this particular roof in Oswestry, we found that the original lead was still in good condition. Therefore we decided not to replace it. This in turn reduced the cost to our customer. Our long experience of roofing enables us to make sound decisions in matters like these.
