Traditional barge board must be matched carefully in order to reflect the character of the property and surrounding area.
Clients in Llangollen have a beautiful older house with unusual fascia and barge boards. The barge boards are an unusual size being 9 inches wide a half an inch thick. The barge boards also have a trim. This is unusual because barge boards are normally 3/4 inch thick, plain, and very flat.
Traditional Barge Board Stripped Back
The traditional barge board, which was old and rotten was stripped back. Roof tiles at the end of this roof were also removed to ensure a complete and watertight finish.
Re-felt, Re-batton and Re-tile
Next, we re-felt, re-batton, and re-tile the end of the roof. We carefully select replacement tiles to provide a perfect match to the original. This is very important in traditional buildings such as this. The roof is then made ready for replacement barge boards. At this point, we always replace any rotten roof timbers to ensure the soundness of the roof.
Customised Traditional Barge Board
We arranged for the original barge board to be copied, including the trim. It is a perfect match as you can see, and looks just like the original. Two coats of black gloss paint are applied to the barge board. Neighbours of our customer are in touch asking for a quote for similar work. This is because they are impressed with the work done.
