Chimney repointing and its associated cost is something we are often asked about. There is a property at Ferrers Road, in Oswestry which has a very large chimney stack where we have recently undertaken repointing work. As you will see below, sometimes, when we look at a chimney repair we look at the whole chimney so we can ensure it will continue to last for years to come.
A Safe Base for Our Workers Whilst Repointing Your Chimney
As you can see from the pictures, scaffolding provides a safe base from which our workers can operate. In this instance, deterioration in the chimney pots on top meant removal was necessary. We also removed the old flaunching as it was brittle, cracked, and at risk of causing water ingress.
What is Flaunching?
Flaunching is the concrete cap of the chimney. As you can imagine, standard chimneys are built with straight sides and may hold multiple chimney pots which are most often round. The flaunching provides a secure base for the chimney pots and seals the rest of the chimney. An excellent example of new launching is in our Completed Work section under Chimney Pot Falls Down Flue. It shows what may happen if flaunching deteriorates.
Repointing and New Pots, Flaunching and Leadwork
The whole chimney was repointed. We then constructed new flaunching and added new pots.
Finally, we added new leadwork all around the base of the chimney so that the whole area would be fully sealed, wind and watertight.
Do I Need to Repoint my Chimney
We are happy to look at your property and provide advice and an estimate of cost. Concrete on chimneys deteriorates over time. The chimney is the most exposed part of your roof and is subject to a lot of harsh weather, both hot and cold. As a householder, it can be difficult / impossible for you to check out your chimney and its state. And the last thing that you want is for a chimney pot to come crashing through your roof one windy night. At times, once we get to the top of a chimney we find that one or more pots are loose! Therefore, if you are unsure, it is a good idea to ask a professional like ourselves to check things out.
